Homeownership 

Habitat for Humanity of Frederick County partners with the community to build and sell affordable homes to qualified buyers. Future homeowners invest sweat equity, complete homeownership training, and follow program guidelines to obtain a mortgage.

If you are considering purchasing a new home, or any other home purchase, here are a few resources and steps to take.

Eligibility

All prospective Habitat homeowners must meet the requirements below. Selected future homeowners undertake financial and homeowner education, receive assistance with mortgage applications and homebuyer assistance programs.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Currently live or work in Frederick County (for a minimum of one year)
  • Have a total household income between 50% to 80% of Frederick County’s
    area median income (AMI) and are able to qualify for a mortgage (inc. credit history, debt-to-income ratio)
  • Demonstrate a need for safe and affordable housing
  • Agree to partner with Habitat and contribute “sweat equity”

Sweat Equity

Habitat for Humanity requires future homeowners to contribute a minimum number of hours of sweat equity during the build of their new home. Sweat equity may include working on construction sites, volunteering in support roles, completing homeowner education classes, and other approved activities that prepare families for successful homeownership.
