Emmitsburg United Methodist Project Moving Ahead

Construction of the Habitat for Humanity home in Emmitsburg for the Sara Lee Family by Frederick County United Methodists will continue through the summer, said Larry Snody, steering committee chair and member of Brook Hill UMC. Prior to the end of the spring semesters, students from both Mount Saint Mary’s University and Gettysburg College took part at various times.

Although the students have gone for the summer, volunteers are still showing up in force. T im Spickler, Trinity UMC in Frederick, Bill Wivell, Trinity UMC in Emmitsburg, and Mark Turner, Pleasant Grove UMC, have been leading the construction effort. The roof is on and interior work such as electrifying and plumbing the home are underway. Drywall installation is planned for early July. Members of Faithpoint UMC will then paint the interior and members of Middletown UMC and Brook Hill UMC will install the cabinets and interior doors and complete the interior trim.

Fundraising has been a tremendous success, according to Treasurer Bob Fenimore, Walkersville UMC. He reports that to date nearly $75,000 have been raised and funds continue to come in. Dave Adams, Calvary UMC, and Mark Renn, Brook Hill UMC, continue to do a remarkable job of procuring in-kind donations or donated services expected to total close to $30,000.

There have been two recent, special donations to the project. In April yo uth groups from Middletown UMC, Asbury UMC and Trinity UMC participated in Volunteer Frederick’s Operation Big Sweep and raised over $1200 for the Habitat house. On June 11-12 Spanky Bentz, Weller UMC in Thurmont, completed a marathon bicycle ride and raised over $4500.

On June 17 Rita Crandall and youth from New Market UMC traveled to Emmitsburg to write blessings and good wishes for the Lee Family on the inside framework, honoring a long-standing Habitat tradition. Emmitsburg area churches continue to provide Saturday lunches for the volunteers at the site.

The goal is to have Sara Lee and her four sons in their new home by the beginning of the school year. For more information about participating in the Emmitsburg Habitat build contact Larry Snody at ldsnody@adelphia.net or at 301-624-0002.
