Habitat Thanks Katie Brois’ Supporters

Frederick — Habitat for Humanity has benefited from a concert Linganore High student Katie Brois organized as her graduation project. The concert featured eight area youth bands who performed for one hour each. In addition Brois enlisted various community businesses who donated prizes or refreshments. The Mt. Airy volunteer Fire Company reduced the rental fee on its activity center as its contribution and the band, Kick Start, provided the sound support gratis.

Other contributors were Alan Day, Frederick; Rick and Phyllis Ricker, Mt. Airy; Damascus Chevrolet and Alban Home Inspection Service, Frederick; the following Mt. Airy establishments: Déjà vu; Ridgeville Carwash and Detail Center; Tip Top Nails; Hair Cuttery; Century Ford; Safeway and Weis Markets; Lauren Jackson, Coldwell Banker; and Starbuck’s Coffee, Rte. 40, Frederick; Pepsi-Cola, Frederick; and Bank America.

Habitat of Frederick is currently building its 23rd home in Emmitsburg in partnership with the United Methodist Churches of Frederick County and students from Mt. St. Mary’s University and Gettysburg College.

In addition the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity is taking part in the Building Homes, Rebuilding Lives campaign celebrating Habitat’s 700th home in Maryland. Habitat estimates over 80,000 volunteers have taken part in providing affordable housing for nearly 2000 men, women and children. The campaign’s goal is to build 1000 more homes in the state by 2008.

Habitat began in Maryland in 1982 and now has 18 chapters or affiliates here. Frederick affiliate began in 1993 and built its first home in 1995. Since then the Frederick chapter has built 22 homes. Information about Habitat is available at www.frederickhabitat.org.
