Gettysburg College To Hold Habitat Fund-raiser Students at Gettysburg College involved with Frederick County Habitat for Humanity in building a home in Emmitsburg, Maryland are planning a fund-raiser for the project. “A spaghetti dinner will take place on campus on Saturday, April 16. Admission payable at the door is $8.00 for adults and $6.00 for students. All the proceeds will go toward construction,” said Eric Payne, student coordinator. The dinner will occur in Christ Chapel between 6 and 8 p.m. Gettysburg College and Mt. St. Mary’s University are collaborating for the first time in helping Habitat. In the past, students from both schools had worked on Habitat projects elsewhere in the country. The proximity of this project makes it ideal for both schools to participate. The United Methodist churches of Frederick County are the primary movers behind this project. “We had already built one home in Brunswick in 2003 and wanted to continue supporting Habitat’s affordable housing mission,” said Steering Committee Chair Larry Snody who invited the two colleges to take part. “The response has been enthusiastic,” he added. “In addition to the fund-raiser students from the college help at the worksite. In order to accommodate us, Habitat and the churches planned an earlier-than-usual building schedule,” said Payne. Normally, Habitat of Frederick builds during the summer and early fall. This kind of schedule makes it difficult for area students to take part. The Emmitsburg home will be the twenty-third built in Frederick County since 1995. Costs are estimated at approximately $140,000.00. Habitat paid $37,000 to develop the lot donated by the Ausherman Family. The churches and the colleges are raising the balance of the money along with donated materials or services. Project Treasurer Bob Fenimore announced at the April 5 Steering Committee Meeting that fund-raising had reached 84 percent of the goal. The new home is being built for Mrs. Sara Lee and her four teenage sons who now live in Thurmont, MD. The family is actively involved in the project, earning the 300 hours of sweat equity required before becoming home owners.
